Manage agents in SharePoint

All site members can create their own agents and use them. Other site members with editing permissions can use, edit, or share these agents. As a site owner, you can choose a main agent for the site.

Before you begin

The permissions required depend on the management task:

  • Site members with edit permissions can delete agent files.
  • Site owners can choose the main agent for the site.
  • Site visitors, members, owners, and admins can monitor agents on a site. SharePoint admins can monitor agent usage across sites.

Approve agents

You don't need to approve agents for a site. Agents created in SharePoint aren't automatically listed or published anywhere. Users can discover agents by manually navigating to .agent files to use them, or they can be placed on the SharePoint page by using the Agent link web part. Use the folder structure under Site Assets > Copilots > Approved to keep track of approved agents. If you publish an agent from Microsoft Copilot Studio to this site, you can find that .agent file in Documents > Copilot Studio Agents.

Note

This behavior changed in June 2026.

Set an agent as the main agent for the site

You can select an agent to be the main agent for the site. This agent opens when users select the Agent icon from the global header. To select the main agent:

  1. Select the Gear icon from the global header to open the Site AI settings panel.
  2. Choose a main agent. You can choose Copilot or any agent created in SharePoint (.agent file) on the site that you have access to.

If you don't make any changes, Copilot is the main agent for the site.

Delete an agent

Site members with edit permissions can delete an agent like deleting other files:

  1. Locate the .agent file. To learn more about how to find the .agent file, see Where to find the agent file.
  2. Select the ellipsis next to the .agent file.
  3. Select Delete.

Monitor agents

If you have at least site visitor permissions (site admins, site owners, site members, and site visitors), you can monitor agents on a SharePoint site by using the following approaches:

  • File statistics: Select an individual .agent file and use the Details pane to view its file statistics.
  • Search: Use Search to find all agents on a site for bulk actions.
  • Site usage: Use Site usage to see the most popular files and agents on their sites.

If you're a SharePoint admin, see Monitor agent usage across sites.
